Requirement | Rule |

Max Holding Time | Medical waste must not be stored for more than 7 days, especially above 32°F (0°C). Storage is permitted for up to 90 days, if stored at or below 32°F (0°C) |
Labeling Requirements | Place in red bags labeled with the biohazard symbol and the word “BIOHAZARD.” |
Container Standards | Containers must be rigid, leak-resistant, and have tight-fitting lids. Sharps must be puncture-resistant, leak-proof, and difficult to reopen once sealed. |
Who Can Haul Waste | Only individuals or companies with a valid hazardous waste transporter registration from the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) are authorized to transport medical waste. |
Documentation Required | Tracking logs with the name of the person transporting the waste, the number of containers transported, and the transport date. |
