Max Holding TimeMedical waste must not be stored for more than 7 days, especially above 32°F (0°C). Storage is permitted for up to 90 days, if stored at or below 32°F (0°C)
Labeling RequirementsPlace in red bags labeled with the biohazard symbol and the word “BIOHAZARD.”
Container StandardsContainers must be rigid, leak-resistant, and have tight-fitting lids. Sharps must be puncture-resistant, leak-proof, and difficult to reopen once sealed.
Who Can Haul WasteOnly individuals or companies with a valid hazardous waste transporter registration from the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) are authorized to transport medical waste.
Documentation RequiredTracking logs with the name of the person transporting the waste, the number of containers transported, and the transport date.
