Max Holding TimeKentucky does not specify a maximum holding time for medical waste in its regulations. However, facilities are encouraged to store medical waste for the shortest time feasible to minimize potential health and environmental risks.
Labeling RequirementsMedical waste containers must be labeled or color-coded in accordance with OSHA standards for bloodborne pathogens (29 CFR 1910.1030).
Container StandardsContainers must be closable and leak-proof. Sharps containers must be rigid and puncture-proof.
Who Can Haul WasteThe KDEP requires that only authorized individuals or entities transport medical waste. Facilities must be properly licensed and permitted to handle and transport medical waste.
Documentation RequiredThe 401 KAR 49:080 mandates that haulers of municipal solid waste, including medical waste, register with and report annually to any county in which they do business.
