Max Holding TimeMedical or biological waste must not be stored for more than 7 days at a temperature above 32°F (0°C). If waste is stored for longer periods, it must be maintained at or below 32°F (0°C).
Labeling RequirementsAll containers used for storing or transporting medical or biological waste must be clearly labeled with the biohazard symbol or the words “Biohazard” or “Infectious Waste.”
Container StandardsMedical or biological waste should be packaged in moisture-resistant, tear-resistant red bags that meet strength requirements. Sharps (e.g., needles, scalpels) must be placed in rigid, puncture-resistant, leak-proof containers that are sealed to prevent spillage.
Who Can Haul WasteOnly individuals or entities licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) are authorized to transport medical or biological waste.
