Max Holding TimeSouth Dakota regulations do not specify a strict maximum holding time for medical waste. However, facilities are required to store such waste in a manner that prevents the development of putrescence and minimizes the risk to public health and the environment.
Labeling RequirementsFacilities generating medical waste must label containers with the universal biohazard symbol and the words "Infectious Waste" or "Biohazardous Waste." Labels should be water-resistant and clearly visible.
Container StandardsSharps must be placed in rigid, leak-resistant, and puncture-resistant containers that are tightly secured to prevent loss of contents. Other infectious waste should be stored in rigid or semi-rigid, leak-resistant containers that are impervious to moisture.
Who Can Haul WasteOnly transporters with a valid permit issued by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) are authorized to haul medical waste within the state.
