Rules for Organizations & Facilities:

RequirementRule
Max Holding TimeInfectious waste may be stored for up to 7 days at room temperature. If stored longer than 7 days, the waste must be refrigerated at or below 40°F (5°C). Under no circumstances may infectious waste be stored for more than 60 days, regardless of temperature.
Labeling RequirementsAll containers holding infectious waste must be red or orange or marked with the international biohazard symbol and labeled with one of the following:
  • “INFECTIOUS WASTE”
  • “BIOMEDICAL WASTE”
  • “BIOHAZARD”
Container StandardsShould be contained in plastic bags or rigid containers that are securely sealed to prevent leakage or expulsion of contents.
Who Can Haul WasteOnly licensed and permitted transporters registered with the Oregon DEQ are authorized to transport infectious waste.
Documentation RequiredRecord keeping (for at least 3 years)
