Max Holding TimeThe regulations stipulate that RMW should not be stored for more than 30 days from the date of generation. However, if the waste is refrigerated at or below 5°C (41°F), it may be stored for up to 60 days.
Labeling RequirementsAll RMW containers must be clearly labeled with the biohazard symbol and the words "Regulated Medical Waste" or "Biohazard." Additionally, the label should include the name, address, and phone number of the generator.
Container StandardsRMW must be placed in containers that are rigid, leak-resistant, and puncture-resistant (for sharps).
Who Can Haul WasteOnly transporters permitted by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are authorized to haul RMW. These transporters must comply with state and federal regulations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation's Hazardous Materials Regulations.
